A Very Happy PC Holi-... um... Bah Humbug!
I hope you and yours had a good Thanksgiving, a day that dares to insinuate that one is giving thanks for something to another someone. The term "Happy Holidays" does not steer clear of religious significance, since the term "Holiday" comes from "Holy-Day", but it sure tries to dillute WHICH holiday you are talking about. I am so bummed by the term, I'm tempted to respond "And a Happy Ground-Hogs Day Holiday to you, too"! I know the person means well, but we are so indoctrinated, that how come we never use the term "holidays" during any other holiday time of the year?
Another anti-PC tirade coming up...
While shopping in K-Mart, I was befuddled by seeing bibs that should have been returned to the factory, since they had a word on them that wasn't English... obviously a mis-print. Then I noticed there were bi-lingual signs. I hope they were there to help teach our legal immigrants the English language. However, I do not remember seeing Vietnamese signs in the 70's when there was an influx from that country, or other languages thusly deferred to. The real bummer was hearing Spanish PA announcement sales blurbs. Why do they enable the non-learning of the language (by "the" language I mean good old US of A style English)? Then I noticed there were a lot of non- English speakers around me in the store. O.K. so I can see the argument that it is good business to cater to what evidently is a large segment of their customer base. But do I have to like it, without being called the R-word? So should I be mad at K-Mart, or mad at the situation that makes K-Mart feel they have to do this? Question: Does Dora the Explorer teach Hispanics English, or is she just concerned with teaching/indoctrinating English speakers (who would otherwise supposedly have no "need" to learn it) Spanish? Maybe its all Jose Feliciano's fault, since his big hit is now blaring across the Muzak?
Oh, well, at least he was born in Puerto Rico, so is legal. Feliz Navidad, everybody! *
* The only part of which I really need to know is "I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart!"
At least old (or is it Ole) Jose wasn't afraid to Say "Merry Christmas!!" Which leads back to the first topic of this post.
We're back Full Circle!
